Internet service provider Hetzner has expanded its dedicated server portfolio with systems from Dell Technologies. To date, 700 Dell PowerEdge R470 servers have been installed in the company’s data centers. The new systems are equipped with Intel Xeon processors and support up to 86 cores. This closes a previous gap for particularly compute-intensive workloads.
Germany-based Hetzner Online GmbH has expanded its dedicated server offering with Dell PowerEdge R470 systems. According to the company, 700 of these servers have so far been put into operation in its own data centers. The servers feature Intel Xeon processors and offer up to 86 cores in a single-socket configuration. Previously, the upper limit for Hetzner’s self-produced systems was a maximum of 48 cores.
With the new server generation, the provider addresses workloads that require higher computing performance. A key factor in the decision for the Dell systems was Intel’s current processor platform. It enables high core counts in a single-socket architecture. This allows the system architecture to be simplified and operations to be made more efficient. In addition, Hetzner forgoes dedicated RAID controllers in favor of a software RAID solution. The integrated iDRAC management solution supports remote administration and monitoring of the systems.
Before introducing the new server generation, Hetzner evaluated solutions from several vendors. Criteria included performance, efficiency, and practical suitability. The systems were tested in the company’s own environments under typical workload conditions.
Sebastian Willer, Director Product & Marketing at Hetzner, describes the positioning of the dedicated servers as follows: “With our dedicated servers, we hit the sweet spot between operating our own data centers and highly abstracted cloud environments. This enables companies to achieve a high degree of self-determination without having to invest in costly data center infrastructure themselves. With the new server generation, we can now also provide this offering for particularly compute-intensive applications.”
The collaboration between Hetzner and Dell Technologies has existed since 2012. Since then, the internet service provider has, according to its own statements, purchased around 20,000 servers from Dell Technologies for both its dedicated server business and its cloud offering.
The PowerEdge R470 servers are deployed in Hetzner’s data centers and expand the existing portfolio with higher performance classes. The systems are available to customers who wish to rent physical servers with a higher core count.
