The new MCP server enables AI agents to interact with the Nutanix Cloud Platform via the Prism v4 API. It translates natural language requests into infrastructure actions while enforcing enterprise access policies.

Nutanix has introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server for the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP). The solution is open-source software that implements the MCP specification and enables AI agents and development tools to interact with NCP via the Nutanix Prism v4 API. The Model Context Protocol is a specification that standardizes communication between AI models and external data sources or tools. Customers can use the server to deploy AI tools in cloud operations and automate routine tasks without relinquishing control over the underlying systems.

Operating hybrid cloud environments requires technical expertise and strict access controls. AI assistants can support the management of such systems, but they require that the actions they execute are authorized and traceable. This level of security is a prerequisite for everyday operational tasks, from performing large-scale system upgrades to monitoring network performance across the enterprise.

The MCP Server serves as an interface between AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor, and the NCP infrastructure. It translates natural language requests into API actions while automatically enforcing applicable security and access policies. The solution provides a dedicated connection for AI tools, allowing IT teams to automate routine operations and develop custom AI-driven workflows.

Thomas Cornely, Executive Vice President, Product Management at Nutanix, describes the approach as part of the company’s cloud operations automation strategy. The server establishes a gateway between AI tools and the platform, enabling customers to use AI in a controlled manner for operating hybrid cloud environments and ensuring compliance and security.

The Prism v4 API Gateway handles execution, governance, and security controls, thereby providing a predictable environment for enterprise AI operations. According to the company, connected AI tools benefit from the platform’s native access controls. Administrators can use AI assistants for system analysis and diagnostics, while human-in-the-loop capabilities ensure that interventions in production environments remain human-authorized.

The server implements role-based access controls (RBAC), through which AI agents may only call APIs for which they have been explicitly authorized. Integrated traffic regulation is designed to prevent excessive or coordinated API requests by AI agents and monitor API usage in automated workflows. Detailed system logs make it transparent which agent initiated which command. Time-consuming operations are offloaded as asynchronous tasks, whose progress and execution status can be monitored until completion.

Developers can use the server to build automation tools and generate scripts via AI assistants in Python, Go, Java, JavaScript, PowerShell, curl, as well as REST- and JSON-compatible formats. Security permissions can be configured through a centralized interface. Teams can also develop custom AI agents to automate and govern their Nutanix infrastructure across defined workflows. The solution is available for download at developers.nutanix.com and can be used in conjunction with common AI agents.
