Storage and data management vendor NetApp has acquired JetStream Software, a specialist in disaster recovery and workload migration for VMware environments. The technology is designed to help customers protect VMware workloads running on third-party storage systems and recover them on NetApp platforms when needed.
NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) has completed the acquisition of JetStream Software, according to the company. JetStream, headquartered in San Jose, California, with a subsidiary in Bangalore, India, specializes in software for disaster recovery and migration of VMware workloads. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
According to NetApp, many enterprises continue to rely on VMware for critical applications. When evaluating cloud strategies, organizations often focus on how to transition workloads while limiting cost, complexity, and operational disruption. Disaster recovery frequently serves as an initial step, with production workloads following later as an organization’s cloud strategy matures.
NetApp CEO George Kurian said, according to a company statement, that data has become the foundation for business growth, AI innovation, and operational continuity. He said the integration of JetStream is intended to expand NetApp’s ability to keep customer data secure, available, and ready for future use, further positioning the company in enterprise resilience and data protection.
Through JetStream’s technology, customers will be able to protect VMware environments running on virtually any storage platform and recover them on NetApp’s own storage offerings, such as Azure NetApp Files.
Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Storage and Services at NetApp, said, according to the company, that customers want to move to the cloud on their own schedule rather than their infrastructure’s schedule. JetStream, he said, allows customers to start with disaster recovery and move to production workloads in the cloud over time.
The timing of the acquisition comes as many VMware customers are reassessing their infrastructure strategies, partly in response to changed licensing terms following Broadcom’s 2023 acquisition of VMware. Storage and data management vendors have since increasingly positioned migration and recovery tools for enterprises seeking to safeguard their VMware environments or move them into cloud infrastructure.
According to NetApp, JetStream complements its existing SnapMirror technology, which remains the company’s preferred replication solution for NetApp environments. Combining both technologies, NetApp said, allows it to protect existing NetApp deployments as well as the considerably larger base of VMware environments running on third-party storage.
With the acquisition, NetApp says it is expanding its ability to help enterprises protect applications, accelerate cloud migration, and modernize infrastructure, while giving customers flexibility to move at their own pace.

He said joining NetApp allows JetStream to bring its technology to a larger number of organizations worldwide and combine it with NetApp’s data services and cloud storage portfolio.
