Graph database provider Neo4j is acquiring British software company GraphAware. The deal is intended to give government agencies and security organizations access to an open, ISO standards-based analysis platform — as an alternative to closed-source solutions such as Palantir Gotham. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.

Neo4j, provider of the Graph Intelligence platform of the same name, has announced the acquisition of GraphAware. The London-based company develops analysis software for law enforcement agencies and security organizations. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals — including foreign direct investment approval in Australia.

At the heart of the agreement is the integration of GraphAware Hume — GraphAware’s flagship analysis platform — into the Neo4j Graph Intelligence Platform. GraphAware Hume helps analysts and investigators consolidate complex and fragmented data into a connected operational picture. The platform is already deployed across a range of security and law enforcement agencies, including the European Commission, Western Australia Police, the U.S. Department of Defense, and additional agencies in the U.S., U.K., EU, and Australia.

Growing Criticism of Closed-Source Platforms

The market for intelligence analysis software is under pressure. Governments are canceling contracts with proprietary software vendors and seeking solutions that ensure data sovereignty and operator control. The backdrop is increasing vendor lock-in at a time of rising geopolitical requirements for data protection.

Neo4j and GraphAware are positioning their combined offering as an open, ISO standards-based alternative. GraphAware Hume supports the ISO-certified Graph Query Language (GQL) standard and is designed for deployment in regulated environments, including AWS GovCloud, private clouds, and on-premises infrastructure. Organizations retain control over their deployment model, their data, and their exit options.

Proven Use Cases in the Field

The combination of graph database and analysis layer targets three core areas: law enforcement, defense, and cyber defense. Western Australia Police — responsible for one of the largest policing jurisdictions in the world — uses the platform to consolidate data from separate systems and identify hidden connections in near real time. The U.S. Department of Defense operates GraphAware and Neo4j in a DoD IL5-accredited environment on the U.S. Air Force’s Cloud One platform. A national European cyber defense agency uses the system for the early detection and assessment of cyber threats.

A Long-Standing Partnership as the Foundation

GraphAware was founded more than a decade ago as the first dedicated Neo4j consulting firm, later transitioning into a product company. Both companies cite this shared history as the foundation for a technically straightforward integration. Following the close of the transaction, GraphAware will operate as a standalone business unit within Neo4j, led by current CEO Michal Bachman.

The acquisition is part of Neo4j’s investment strategy announced in October 2025, which allocated $100 million for AI product innovation and strategic initiatives. These include the launch of Neo4j Aura Agent, an MCP server for Neo4j, and an AI-native startup program with more than 700 registered companies. According to Neo4j, the number of customers using graph technology for AI-enabled applications in production has grown fourfold.
