A new Forrester Opportunity Snapshot commissioned by USU highlights how tool sprawl, visibility gaps, and manual processes hinder modern IT operations. As hybrid multicloud and AI workloads grow, enterprises seek smarter monitoring solutions focused on service context, dependency mapping, and faster root-cause analysis.

In an era of increasingly complex IT landscapes, traditional monitoring approaches are reaching their limits. According to a recent Forrester Consulting study commissioned by USU, most organizations rely on multiple tools that excel at basic tasks but fall short in delivering unified visibility and actionable intelligence needed for today’s hybrid, multicloud, and AI-driven environments.

The Persistent Challenge of Tool Sprawl and Fragmentation

The study, based on a survey of 423 IT decision-makers across the United States and Europe, reveals that 83% of organizations use three or more monitoring tools. Many operate a mixed model combining self-managed and SaaS solutions (37%). While this layered approach has helped manage growing complexity, it has also created fragmented environments where responsibilities, data flows, and service impacts are poorly connected.

According to the report, hybrid structures have evolved out of necessity rather than strategic design. As a result, IT teams face significant operational friction. Visibility gaps across hybrid environments remain a major challenge for 42% of respondents, directly contributing to slow issue detection and root-cause analysis (41%). Additionally, 35% struggle to scale monitoring as their environments expand.

Current Tools: Strong on Basics, Weak on Strategic Needs

Monitoring tools perform well on foundational tasks. Eighty-three percent of respondents rated their tools as effective or very effective at detecting issues before they impact users, while 82% praised day-to-day operational support and 81% noted strong performance in maintaining business-critical services.

However, effectiveness drops sharply for more advanced requirements. Only 63% reported a clear unified view across systems and environments, and just 59% felt supported for AI-enabled or data-intensive workloads. These shortcomings highlight a critical gap as organizations prepare for more sophisticated architectures.

Respondents also cited high maintenance overhead (45%), limited visibility (42%), and slow root-cause analysis as primary pain points. Managing these tools often requires specialized skills (64% agreement) and involves time-consuming upgrades (62%), making costs harder to predict and control as environments grow.

The Shift Toward Smarter Incident Intelligence

Organizations are not simply demanding more data. Instead, they prioritize context and insight. When resolving critical service-impacting incidents, 42% valued clear dependency mapping across applications, infrastructure, and third-party services, while 41% sought faster root-cause identification.

This reflects a broader market movement toward monitoring models that reduce operational burden, improve clarity, and accelerate issue resolution. Key desired outcomes for next-generation platforms include faster issue resolution (62%), improved service reliability (60%), and reduced operational effort (48%).

Conclusion: Time for Modernization

Traditional monitoring has reached its limits. The Forrester study underscores the need for solutions that deliver service-level context, dependency insight, and intelligent automation across complex IT environments. By embracing smarter approaches, organizations can move from reactive firefighting to proactive, resilient operations that support business agility in the AI era.
