Gartner has replaced its Product Information Management (PIM) Market Guide with a Magic Quadrant covering 16 vendors. According to the analysts, agentic commerce, MCP interfaces and EU product regulation are changing what buyers should demand.

Product information management (PIM) is moving from the back office to the center of digital commerce. In its new Magic Quadrant for PIM solutions, published on 12 October 2026, Gartner describes a market shaped by new sales channels, AI platforms and agentic commerce – and assesses 16 vendors on how well they are prepared for it.

The report replaces Gartner’s earlier Market Guide for the segment. According to the analysts, client interest and investment are high, and all featured vendors show strong year-over-year growth in revenue and customers. The driver is the growing number of channels – marketplaces, social platforms, distributors, brand portals and, increasingly, AI platforms – each with its own schema and content requirements. PIM systems have to pull product data from ERP, MDM, PLM and supplier systems, cleanse and structure it, and prepare it for every destination. Gartner argues that improving product information at the source, before syndication, is becoming a competitive advantage.

A key inflection point, Gartner says, is agentic commerce: AI agents that search for products, compare them and eventually buy on behalf of customers. Such agents need product data that is not only structured but rich enough for machines to interpret and act on. Gartner therefore advises enterprise buyers to look beyond classic catalog management and to weigh AI-driven enrichment, product experience management (PXM) and digital shelf analytics. They should also check whether their data architecture is ready for internal and external AI agents.

Five Leaders, one Challenger

Gartner names five Leaders: Akeneo, Inriver, Salesforce (through its Informatica acquisition), Stibo Systems and Syndigo. Salsify is the only Challenger. Bluestone PIM, Pimcore and Viamedici are rated Visionaries, while apollon, Base.com, Centric Software, Equadis, insightsoftware, Pimberly and Plytix are Niche Players. All three Visionaries and five of the seven Niche Players operate primarily in Europe or EMEA, which makes the list particularly relevant for DACH buyers.

The vendor assessments show how differently the Leaders are positioned. Gartner credits Akeneo with syndication to more than 500 marketplaces and a modular architecture, Inriver with fast market responsiveness and visual workflow builders, and Salesforce with industry taxonomies and data-pool connections. Stibo Systems is praised for core PIM functions such as modeling complex hierarchies, and Syndigo for industry accelerators and for PIM revenue and customer growth that Gartner counts among the highest in the report.

The cautions are just as specific. Akeneo is not a certified GS1 data pool operator, Inriver lacks a native supplier onboarding module and grows below the average, and Salesforce offers fewer syndication connectors than its peers. Stibo Systems charges separately for some AI capabilities that competitors bundle, and Syndigo’s pricing model has numerous variables, while its acquisition of 1WorldSync adds integration work.

The Visionaries stand out with AI-first architectures. Bluestone PIM offers a production MCP server and lets customers switch between language models, Pimcore provides an SDK for AI agents plus a free community edition, and Viamedici combines a multidomain data model with visual workflow modeling. Niche Players are credited with focused strengths – Equadis, for instance, as a GS1-certified GDSN data pool operator.

MCP servers, AI maturity and regulation

Many vendors now ship Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers so that AI assistants, such as Anthropic’s Claude or Microsoft’s Copilot, can work directly with PIM data. Gartner expects MCP and assistants to become the main interface to PIM systems over time, but warns that vendors still have to solve questions of token costs, security and permissions. Clients are demanding cost transparency and robust role-based access controls. Maturity varies: Akeneo’s new agents need thorough testing, apollon plans its MCP server and assistant for the fourth quarter of 2026, and insightsoftware’s MCP integration is still pending.

Regulation is a weaker spot. Gartner rates vendor readiness for evolving requirements as inconsistent: many providers point to flexible data models and leave customers to design their own regulatory structures instead of offering templates or accelerators. Digital product passports (DPP) under the EU’s ESPR are a recurring theme. Bluestone PIM, Viamedici, Centric Software and Syndigo have released DPP-related tools or accelerators, while apollon, Pimcore and Pimberly list them on their roadmaps.

What buyers should take away

For IT decision-makers and channel partners, Gartner’s message boils down to reviewing the product data architecture now and testing AI features before a broad rollout. The findings also suggest that buyers should clarify which AI functions are licensed separately and check whether a vendor offers preconfigured regulatory templates rather than only a flexible data model. Gartner reports positive client sentiment, with organizations citing better ROI and efficiency from modern PIM deployments. As with any analyst report, the Magic Quadrant reflects Gartner’s opinions rather than statements of fact.
