Data storage management services vendor Datadobi has extended its StorageMAP platform with a Data Access Governance capability. The feature is designed to show organizations who has access to unstructured data and whether that access aligns with internal policy.
Datadobi has added Data Access Governance (DAG) capabilities to its StorageMAP platform. According to the company, the feature is now generally available and is designed to give organizations visibility into who has access to their unstructured data and whether that access complies with internal policy. The addition extends StorageMAP’s role as what Datadobi describes as an intelligence and orchestration layer for discovering, reconciling and operationalizing data across fragmented IT environments.
Datadobi argues that organizations cannot manage, protect or derive value from data they cannot see or control, and that conventional approaches are increasingly strained by AI requirements, cyber risk and growing data complexity.
The DAG capability is intended to give administrators visibility into access permissions across fragmented, unstructured data environments, showing who can access which data and whether that access is consistent with corporate and security policy. Datadobi says this allows organizations to identify misassigned permissions, reduce cyber risk and implement governance policies at scale. The company positions this visibility as the first stage of a four-stage model — visibility, understanding, decision and action — that it says determines how confidently organizations can act on their data.
Extending existing functionality
DAG builds on StorageMAP’s existing capabilities for discovering and classifying enterprise data, risk assessment, lifecycle management and AI-readiness assessment. Datadobi says the feature has already been tested by a number of beta customers for use cases including protecting sensitive data, limiting damage from data breaches, meeting retention and compliance requirements, and managing risk during mergers, acquisitions and divestitures.
Faster response to incidents and audits
Datadobi says early-access customers previously lacked a comprehensive understanding of which critical datasets might be exposed and who could access them, and often had to rely on manual reviews to respond to audits and security incidents. With the new capability, the company says organizations can more quickly identify data with overly broad access rights and review access controls. For organizations investing in AI, Datadobi positions DAG as a governance foundation for trusted, well-managed data; for those subject to regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA or PCI DSS, it says the feature provides the transparency needed to demonstrate that access controls exist and function as intended.
“Unstructured data sits at the center of the biggest challenges organizations face today, including AI readiness, cyber resilience, cost control and compliance,” Michael Jack, co-founder and chief revenue officer of Datadobi, said in the announcement. He said Data Access Governance is meant to give teams the visibility to understand who has access to which data, identify risk and take action to gain control over unstructured data.
