With the Context Engine, Neo4j is introducing a component designed to consolidate enterprise knowledge from different systems into a central knowledge layer. According to the vendor, this gives AI agents the business context they need to deliver reliable results.

Neo4j unveiled the Neo4j Context Engine. The provider of the graph intelligence platform of the same name wants to enable companies to build a knowledge layer, a centrally available body of knowledge for agentic AI. AI agents are meant to capture enterprise knowledge, connect it, and use it for reasoning. According to Neo4j, this improves the agents’ contextual understanding, reach, and memory, and with them the reliability of results.

Missing business context as the starting point

AI agents can automate and accelerate business processes. However, they do not inherently know what “customer,” “account,” “supplier,” or “risk” mean in a given company, or how these concepts relate to one another. The necessary information is often scattered across databases, applications, documentation, and individual AI implementations. Context and guidance are missing to ensure that the right data is available at the right time in the right structure.

Four building blocks for the knowledge layer

At the core of the Context Engine is a business ontology: a predefined, six-layer model that links areas of knowledge such as organization, business processes, data, and AI resources in a Neo4j graph database. According to the company, it is based on best practices from hundreds of customer implementations, connects physical data sources with business logic, and is meant to support both the design phase and ongoing operations.

Companies can build the ontology from existing data sources such as Databricks or Snowflake and make it available to AI applications. AI orchestration layers access it and supply process-driven agents or agents for conversational analytics with business context. The semantic layer can be operated via headless execution, command-line tools, or Python packages and connected to data platforms, data catalogs, and storage systems. Change management and customizable frameworks are built in. GraphRAG retrievers access it in a targeted way.

Context Studio serves as the central interface for management and governance. Teams use it to define ontologies and workflows visually and to configure AI agents, MCP servers (Model Context Protocol), and developer tools.

Context Memory is a graph-native memory layer for agents. It supports short-term and long-term memory and stores reasoning results. Decisions, rationales, and process paths are logged; graph algorithms condense recurring patterns into reusable knowledge. This is intended to improve the quality of future results step by step.

Analyst perspective

In its August 2026 Market Overview, Gartner describes AI context platforms as software that lets teams build, manage, and deliver semantically structured knowledge for agents. Context is treated as a standalone enterprise asset whose lifecycle is decoupled from that of individual agents.

Sanjeev Mohan, principal at SanjMo, calls context the foundation of trustworthy enterprise AI. For more complex agent-based use cases, he says, inferring relationships is not enough; they need to be modeled explicitly. Sudhir Hasbe, president of technology and CPO at Neo4j, describes other approaches as workarounds that reach their limits as agents grow more complex. Neo4j points to decades of experience with graphs and ontologies.
