Organizations face pressure to advance digital transformation with limited resources. A white paper from SUSE outlines how open, interoperable and automated IT foundations can help reduce complexity and improve operational efficiency.


Enterprise IT departments are required to run infrastructure, ensure security and compliance, and support new business initiatives at the same time. Many teams work with distributed systems, different Linux distributions, containers, virtual machines, and hybrid and multi-cloud architectures. These heterogeneous environments often lead to manual processes and reactive troubleshooting.

According to the white paper, a key lever is simplifying the technology stack. The approach is based on four elements: visibility, automation, interoperability and resilience.

Visibility forms the foundation. Unified management and monitoring are intended to provide real-time insight into system health, security and performance. This applies in particular to distributed infrastructures that range from data centers to the cloud to edge nodes. Without this visibility, risks for outages and security gaps increase.

Automation addresses recurring tasks such as patching and updates. When these workflows are automated, the effort required for system maintenance decreases. Teams can focus more on strategic projects. In addition, the need for specialized knowledge for each individual platform is reduced.

Interoperability aims to connect silos. The paper argues that isolated systems create bottlenecks and security risks. Unified operations are meant to connect cloud, AI and edge environments and enable management across diverse infrastructures.

Resilience relates to avoiding downtime. The document points to the high cost of downtime, especially in regulated industries. Predictive analytics and automated workflows are intended to help detect problems early and shorten recovery times.

The white paper maps these principles to different technology domains. In the Linux area, the focus is on automated lifecycle management and simplified administration in mixed environments. In the cloud-native area, the focus is on unified orchestration, integrated security and centralized observability for Kubernetes environments.

For artificial intelligence, challenges are cited in governance, compliance, data privacy and resource requirements. The paper describes a platform approach that brings together provisioning, monitoring, version management and security functions for AI models.

In the edge area, the emphasis is on operational consistency and maintenance with limited bandwidth and connectivity. Automated workflows and predictive maintenance are designed to keep operations stable outside central data centers.

User examples are cited for illustration. Mitsubishi Power Aero reports scaling edge sites after migrating to a solution based on SUSE Linux Micro. T-Systems International refers to the use of Rancher Prime to build and manage a Kubernetes infrastructure. Danelec describes the use of SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro on vessels with limited bandwidth.

The paper concludes that reducing complexity and operational costs not only saves time but also creates capacity for innovation. An open, interoperable foundation is intended to allow organizations to optimize resources and translate investments into value more quickly, without lock-in to a single vendor.
