Was KI-Programme wie DALL-E 2 für die Zukunft der Künstler bedeuten, erklärt Maximilian Schmidt, CEO der CPI Technologies GmbH, in einem Gastbeitrag.

What AI programs like DALL-E 2 mean for the future of artists is explained by Maximilian Schmidt, CEO of CPI Technologies GmbH, in a guest article.

This Person Does Not Exist.

Once fiction, now reality: artificial intelligence is currently revolutionizing the media world. More and more AI software is being introduced. The possibilities they offer are extremely diverse. Such tools are already finding a place in many industries – including digital art. DALL-E 2, an image generator program also based on AI, is currently experiencing a lot of hype. Similar offerings include Stable Diffusion, Pixelvibe, Playground and Midjourney. Photorealistic royalty-free images of non-existent people generate AI offers like This Person Does Not Exist.

On voice command, DALL-E 2 creates diverse, unique images – and does so in a matter of seconds. For art enthusiasts, the software is all the rage, but for those employed and self-employed in the arts and media industries, it’s a horror. What do AI programs like DALL-E 2 mean for their future? What are their downsides and what are their upsides? How artistically gifted is the program already and what does the future development look like?

New worlds are created with DALL-E 2

The program DALL-E 2 proves that art sometimes has no limits. Users can literally request any possible image and the program implements it – from astronauts on horses in outer space to kangaroos playing basketball. Image generation takes place in just a few steps: The desired motif is typed in keywords, or you upload an image that the program should use to create a new one. In a few seconds, different variations are created.

The special feature of DALL-E 2 is the fact that the program generates new images from scratch. It does not make use of collages, but creates images based on its knowledge. After all, it has been trained with millions of images and knows which features go with which term. It is aware of what a woman is, what a soccer ball is, what the moon or an artist’s style looks like, and more.

But even this AI has its downsides. Not every input yields the desired result. If the information is too detailed, it can lead to confusion for the algorithms. Also, human faces are visualized abnormally in most cases. This is where the software has significant deficiencies.

How artists react to AI art programs

That artists such as graphic designers are not enthusiastic about DALL-E 2 and similar AI tools is obvious. On social media, thousands of them condemn the introduction and usability of these programs. They fear that they will soon have to give up their jobs, because AI can apparently do everything.

In addition, the AI image generators are obviously improving in quality, and the images are looking more and more real. Amazing motifs are created in a matter of seconds – work for which artists would possibly spend hours or days at their computers. In addition, many of the images generated are based on well-known works of art. Laws and regulations are lacking here, because the images are still created in a legal vacuum. For this reason, numerous artists decided to demonstrate against the AI programs and have Disney-style images generated. Disney is known for being particularly under copyright. In this way, artists want to create pressure and draw attention to the issue.

A case law – at least for the protection of large brands – will most likely follow. Whether further regulations will be introduced to protect smaller artists as well is not yet known.

Will graphic artists & co. soon lose their jobs?

Nevertheless, artists need not worry about their jobs: Artificial intelligence will not be able to replace humans anytime soon. At any rate, it would still take several decades. For one thing, AI software still has significant shortcomings. For another, it is not a new phenomenon that new technologies are perceived as a threat at first glance. In the past, these fears have been proven wrong: Innovations do not take over the work of people, but are used as additional tools to increase the efficiency of work. So too in this case of art and AI.

Workers in the arts and media industries can remain calm for now, because AI is far from being on the same level as them. Even if the capabilities of the software are admirable – they cannot replace the work of real artists.

Conclusion: no need to worry for artists

AI systems are fascinating and frightening at the same time. What was dreams of the future before is already reality today. With image generators like DALL-E 2, which work with AI algorithms, you can create fantastic worlds in just a few seconds. For art lovers, this is an absolute dream in reality. However, among real artists, the introduction of the program caused a great uproar. However, the concern is not justified, because they can not be replaced so quickly. Now it’s a case of wait and see. Regulations and laws to protect artists could soon be enforced.
