Hasso Plattner gründet Uni-Campus – Hasso Plattner establishes university campus

Gleichzeitig wird das Hasso-Plattner-Institut (HPI) am Standort Griebnitzsee erheblich erweitert und zu einem europaweit führenden Institut für digitale Wissenschaften in Europa ausgebaut. Grundlage dieser umfassenden Entwicklung beider Standorte ist eine heute unterzeichnete Absichtserklärung zwischen dem Land Brandenburg, der UP und der Hasso Plattner Foundation (HPF), die einen dreistelligen Millionenbetrag bereitstellen wird.

Ministerpräsident Dr. Dietmar Woidke: „Nirgends entwickelt sich die Technologie so schnell, wie auf dem Gebiet der künstlichen Intelligenz. KI verändert die Arbeitswelt, den Alltag und viele andere Bereiche. Mit dem noch stärkeren Ausbau des HPI und der gemeinsamen Digital Engineering Fakultät mit der Universität Potsdam wird Brandenburg zukünftig ganz vorn mit dabei sein. Der neue Uni-Campus auf dem Brauhausberg wird international Maßstäbe setzen für moderne Forschung und Lehre. Die Universität Potsdam rückt ins Herz der Stadt an einen geschichtsträchtigen Ort. Investitionen in die Wissenschaft und Stadtsanierung werden in herausragender Art und Weise miteinander verknüpft – zum Nutzen aller. Ich danke Hasso Plattner, der als Stifter und Förderer hier in großartiger Weise die Zukunft im Blick hat. Ich beglückwünsche die Universität Potsdam zu dieser tollen Entwicklungsperspektive. Danke auch der Hasso Plattner Foundation, der Universität Potsdam sowie der Stadt Potsdam für die vertrauensvolle und konstruktive Zusammenarbeit. Jetzt geht es an die Umsetzung und ich freue mich auf die gemeinsame Arbeit in der Task Force.“

Prof. Oliver Günther, Präsident der Universität Potsdam (UP): „Diese großartigen Entwicklungen erlauben es der Universität Potsdam, hochschulweit Lehr- und Lernwelten der Zukunft zu gestalten. Besonders am Brauhausberg und am Griebnitzsee werden ganz neue Formen des gemeinsamen akademischen Lebens und Lernens entstehen. Die von HPI und UP gemeinsam getragene Digital Engineering Fakultät wird sich zu einem weltweit sichtbaren Ort der Spitzenforschung in KI und Informatik weiterentwickeln. Aber auch Am Neuen Palais und im Potsdam Science Park in Golm kommt nun endlich Bewegung in schon lange geplante Bauvorhaben. Außerdem werden wir gemeinsam mit der Landesregierung an der Beschleunigung von Berufungen und am Bürokratieabbau arbeiten. Für diese Impulse sind wir Hasso Plattner und seiner Stiftung sehr zu Dank verpflichtet.“

Der stellvertretende Ministerpräsident und Finanzminister Robert Crumbach: „Das ist für alle Beteiligten eine absolute Win-Win-Situation: Die geplante Investition am Brauhausberg einerseits und die dadurch mögliche Weiterentwicklung des Standortes am Potsdamer Griebnitzsee werten den Wissenschaftsstandort Potsdam weiter auf und machen die Stadt und das Land Brandenburg zu einem der führenden Hightech-Standorte. Hier kann ein europäisches Massachusetts Institute of Technology entstehen. Ich gehe davon aus, dass sich weitere Unternehmen und Start-Ups der Informationstechnologien hier ansiedeln werden.“

Wissenschaftsministerin Dr. Manja Schüle: „Die Wissenschaftsfreiheit kommt weltweit immer stärker unter Druck. Digitale Souveränität zu erlangen, wird für Europa eine immer dringlichere Notwendigkeit. In dieser Situation zeigt Hasso Plattner einmal mehr, dass er Visionär und Macher zugleich ist: Er gibt eine klare Antwort auf beide Herausforderungen. Mit der Entscheidung der Hasso Plattner Foundation kann das HPI ein mindestens europaweit führendes Zentrum der digitalen Innovation werden – eng verbunden mit der Universität Potsdam. Für die größte Hochschule des Landes ergibt sich die einmalige Chance, die Exzellenzpotenziale noch besser auszuschöpfen. Der heutige Tag ist ein Meilenstein für die Wissenschaftspolitik in Brandenburg und weit darüber hinaus.“

Das HPI ist bereits heute eine herausragende Institution für digitale Bildung, Forschung und Innovation. Es wird gemeinsam mit der UP zu einem Leuchtturm in der internationalen Wissenschaftslandschaft ausgebaut. Die gemeinsam getragene Digital Engineering Fakultät wird weitere Masterstudiengänge, internationale Kooperationen und Forschungsschwerpunkte insbesondere im Bereich der Künstlichen Intelligenz entwickeln. Die enge Zusammenarbeit von HPI und UP im Rahmen der Digital Engineering Fakultät wird strategisch weiterentwickelt und vertieft. Die Universität wird im Rahmen der Vereinbarung zugleich an den Standorten Golm und NeuesAm Neuen Palais durch das Land Brandenburg unterstützt – mit dem Ziel, moderne, leistungsfähige und zukunftsorientierte Studienbedingungen im gesamten Stadtgebiet zu schaffen.

Am Standort Griebnitzsee übernimmt die Hasso Plattner Foundation die bislang von der Universität Potsdam genutzten Flächen und Gebäude. Im Gegenzug stellt sie Ersatzflächen auf dem Brauhausberg bereit. Dort entsteht ein weiterer Universitätscampus – einschließlich der Sanierung denkmalgeschützter Bausubstanz. Die Fertigstellung beider Standorte ist bis spätestens 2035 geplant.

Das Land Brandenburg, die Universität Potsdam und die Hasso Plattner Foundation haben sich auf einen entsprechenden Letter of Intent verständigt. Dieser umfasst im Wesentlichen folgende Verabredungen und deren nähere Ausgestaltung:

1. Unterstützung der Wachstumsperspektiven des HPI am Standort Griebnitzsee durch das Land, insbesondere durch die Ermöglichung eines Höchstmaßes an Autonomie in akademischen Belangen für das Institut und die gemeinsame Digital- Engineering- Fakultät.
2. Entwicklung des Campus Griebnitzsee für das HPI und des Campus Brauhausberg für die Universität Potsdam durch die Hasso Plattner Foundation.
3. Unterstützung der Stiftung bei den Planungs- und Bauprozessen im Rahmen einer Task Force auf Leitungsebene.
4. Unterstützung der Universität Potsdam bei den bereits geplanten Baumaßnahmen an den Standorten Golm und NeuesAm Neuen Palais und Beschleunigung der Maßnahmen.

Um das komplexe Vorhaben hinreichend zwischen allen Akteuren zu koordinieren, Verzögerungen zu vermeiden und einen reibungslosen Ablauf sicherzustellen, sollen im Rahmen der geplanten Task Force sämtliche Maßnahmen einem regelmäßigen Monitoring unterzogen und auftretende Probleme unmittelbar zwischen allen Beteiligten auf Chefebene besprochen und gelöst werden. Die Task Force wird geleitet von Ministerpräsident Dietmar Woidke und Stifter Hasso Plattner. Mitglieder sind darüber hinaus Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Staatskanzlei, des Ministeriums für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur, des Ministeriums der Finanzen und für Europa sowie des Ministeriums des Innern und für Kommunales jeweils auf Ministerebene, der Präsident der Universität Potsdam sowie die Stadt Potsdam. Je nach Themen können unterhalb der Task Force fachspezifische Arbeitsgruppen gebildet werden, die regelmäßig tagen sollen.

Zunächst ist vorgesehen, die beiden Arbeitsgruppen „Planen und Bauen“ unter Leitung des Ministers des Innern und für Kommunales sowie „Lehr- und Forschungskooperation“ unter Leitung der Ministerin für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur einzusetzen. In der AG „Planen und Bauen“ wirken insbesondere Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Staatskanzlei, der HPF, aus MIK, MWFK und MdFE, der UP, des Brandenburgischen Landesbetriebes für Liegenschaften und Bauen, des HPI sowie der Stadt Potsdam mit. In der AG „Lehr- und Forschungskooperation Planen und Bauen“ wirken insbesondere Vertreter der Staatskanzlei, der HPF, des MWFK, des HPI und der UP mit.

Laut der „Berliner Zeitung“ kann sich nun für Plattner der „Kreis meiner Universitätsträume schließen“. Er sei vor über 25 Jahren auf den Brauhausberg gestiegen „und dachte, es wäre eine schöne Sache, wenn ich hier eine Universität gründen würde“, sagte Plattner. Anstatt eine neue Uni zu gründen, trägt er jetzt zur Entwicklung einer weiteren Fakultät der Universität Potsdam bei. Plattner betonte: „Die Universität Potsdam liegt mir durchaus am Herzen.“

Über den US-Präsidenten Donald Trump und seine Pläne an den Universitäten sagte Plattner: „Was der große Mann in Washington derzeit tut, ist fürchterlich, aber für uns auch eine Chance: Wir haben die erste Professorin von Harvard für Künstliche Intelligenz für uns gewonnen.“

Dem „Tagesspiegel“ zufolge nannte Plattner bei der Vorstellung des Projekts keine Summe, sagte aber, von einer dreistelligen Millionensumme sei auszugehen. Mit Blick auf die Hasso Plattner Foundation sagte er: „Was immer uns das kosten wird, die Stiftung kann das finanzieren.“  Der SAP-Mitgründer sieht angesichts der Entwicklung in den USA „eine historische Chance die nächsten dreieinhalb Jahre, aufzuholen“.

At the same time, the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) at the Griebnitzsee site will be significantly expanded and developed into a leading institute for digital sciences in Europe. The basis for this comprehensive development of both sites is a memorandum of understanding signed today between the state of Brandenburg, the UP, and the Hasso Plattner Foundation (HPF), which will provide a three-digit million euro sum.

Minister President Dr. Dietmar Woidke: “Nowhere is technology developing as rapidly as in the field of artificial intelligence. AI is changing the world of work, everyday life, and many other areas. With the further expansion of the HPI and the joint Digital Engineering Faculty with the University of Potsdam, Brandenburg will be at the forefront in the future. The new university campus on Brauhausberg will set international standards for modern research and teaching. The University of Potsdam is moving to a historic location in the heart of the city. Investments in science and urban redevelopment are being combined in an outstanding way – for the benefit of all. I would like to thank Hasso Plattner, who, as a benefactor and sponsor, has a great vision for the future here. I congratulate the University of Potsdam on this great development prospect. I would also like to thank the Hasso Plattner Foundation, the University of Potsdam, and the city of Potsdam for their trusting and constructive cooperation. Now it’s time to get started, and I look forward to working together in the task force.”

Europe needs places where talents from all over the world can think, research, and create freely – Potsdam will be such a place.“

Prof. Oliver Günther, President of the University of Potsdam (UP): ”These great developments allow the University of Potsdam to shape the teaching and learning environments of the future across the entire university. Brauhausberg and Griebnitzsee in particular will see the emergence of entirely new forms of shared academic life and learning. The Digital Engineering Faculty, jointly supported by HPI and UP, will develop into a globally visible center of excellence in AI and computer science. But at the New Palace and in the Potsdam Science Park in Golm, long-planned construction projects are finally getting underway. In addition, we will work together with the state government to accelerate appointments and reduce bureaucracy. We are very grateful to Hasso Plattner and his foundation for these initiatives.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Robert Crumbach: “This is an absolute win-win situation for everyone involved: the planned investment at Brauhausberg on the one hand and the resulting further development of the Potsdam Griebnitzsee site on the other will further enhance Potsdam’s reputation as a center of science and make the city and the state of Brandenburg one of the leading high-tech locations. A European Massachusetts Institute of Technology could be created here. I expect that other information technology companies and start-ups will settle here as well.“

Minister of Science Dr. Manja Schüle: ”Academic freedom is coming under increasing pressure worldwide. Achieving digital sovereignty is becoming an increasingly urgent necessity for Europe. In this situation, Hasso Plattner once again shows that he is both a visionary and a doer: he provides a clear answer to both challenges. With the decision of the Hasso Plattner Foundation, the HPI can become a leading center of digital innovation, at least in Europe – closely linked to the University of Potsdam. This presents a unique opportunity for the state’s largest university to exploit its potential for excellence even better. Today is a milestone for science policy in Brandenburg and far beyond.“

The HPI is already an outstanding institution for digital education, research, and innovation. Together with the UP, it will be expanded into a beacon in the international scientific landscape. The jointly supported Digital Engineering Faculty will develop further master’s programs, international collaborations, and research priorities, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. The close cooperation between HPI and UP within the Digital Engineering Faculty will be strategically developed and deepened. Under the agreement, the university will also receive support from the state of Brandenburg at its Golm and Neues Palais locations, with the aim of creating modern, efficient, and future-oriented study conditions throughout the city.

At the Griebnitzsee location, the Hasso Plattner Foundation will take over the space and buildings previously used by the University of Potsdam. In return, it will provide replacement space on Brauhausberg. Another university campus will be built there, including the renovation of listed buildings. Completion of both locations is planned for 2035 at the latest.

The state of Brandenburg, the University of Potsdam, and the Hasso Plattner Foundation have agreed on a letter of intent to this effect. This essentially comprises the following agreements and their detailed implementation:

1. Support for the HPI’s growth prospects at the Griebnitzsee location by the state, in particular by enabling maximum autonomy in academic matters for the institute and the joint digital engineering faculty.
2. Development of the Griebnitzsee campus for the HPI and the Brauhausberg campus for the University of Potsdam by the Hasso Plattner Foundation.
3. Support for the foundation in the planning and construction processes within the framework of a task force at management level.
4. Support for the University of Potsdam in the construction measures already planned at the Golm and Neues Palais locations and acceleration of the measures.

In order to adequately coordinate the complex project between all parties involved, avoid delays, and ensure a smooth process, all measures are to be regularly monitored within the framework of the planned task force, and any problems that arise are to be discussed and resolved immediately between all parties involved at the executive level. The task force is headed by Minister President Dietmar Woidke and founder Hasso Plattner. Other members include representatives of the State Chancellery, the Ministry of Science, Research, and Culture, the Ministry of Finance and for Europe, and the Ministry of the Interior and Municipal Affairs, each at the ministerial level, the president of the University of Potsdam, and the city of Potsdam. Depending on the topic, subject-specific working groups may be formed under the task force, which will meet regularly.

Initially, it is planned to set up two working groups: “Planning and Construction” under the leadership of the Minister of the Interior and Municipal Affairs, and “Teaching and Research Cooperation” under the leadership of the Minister of Science, Research, and Culture. The “Planning and Construction” working group includes representatives from the State Chancellery, the HPF, MIK, MWFK, and MdFE, the UP, the Brandenburg State Agency for Real Estate and Construction, the HPI, and the city of Potsdam. The “Teaching and Research Cooperation Planning and Construction” working group includes representatives from the State Chancellery, the HPF, the MWFK, the HPI, and the UP.

According to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, Plattner can now “close the circle of my university dreams.” He climbed Brauhausberg over 25 years ago “and thought it would be a wonderful thing to found a university here,” said Plattner. Instead of founding a new university, he is now contributing to the development of another faculty at the University of Potsdam. Plattner emphasized: “The University of Potsdam is very close to my heart.”

Regarding US President Donald Trump and his plans for universities, Plattner said: “What the great man in Washington is doing at the moment is terrible, but it’s also an opportunity for us: we have recruited Harvard’s first female professor of artificial intelligence.”

According to the Tagesspiegel newspaper, Plattner did not mention a specific amount when presenting the project, but said that it would likely be in the hundreds of millions. With regard to the Hasso Plattner Foundation, he said: “Whatever it costs us, the foundation can finance it.” In view of developments in the US, the SAP co-founder sees “a historic opportunity to catch up over the next three and a half years.”
