Following its acquisition of Satori, Commvault extends its cloud platform with real-time access controls for structured databases and AI vector data, aiming to close a critical gap in enterprise data security.

struggling to keep up. According to a recent Varonis report, nine out of ten companies expose sensitive data in ways that AI systems could exploit. A Spacelift study further found that 46 percent of all data exposures involve personal customer information, while 40 percent concern employee data. The consequences range from regulatory fines to prolonged recovery efforts following successful breaches.

Commvault is addressing this challenge through an expansion of its Commvault Cloud platform, incorporating capabilities derived from its 2025 acquisition of Satori, a specialist in structured data access governance. The update centers on two additions: real-time access controls for structured databases and enhanced discovery and classification of sensitive data across structured environments.

Real-Time Control Extends to AI Vector Databases

Until now, Commvault’s Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) focused primarily on unstructured data. The current update brings structured databases into the governance framework – a segment that accounts for a significant share of enterprise data. Notably, the new access controls also cover vector databases, which are increasingly used by AI applications and have often fallen outside traditional security architectures.

The access control layer monitors and enforces, in real time, which users or applications are permitted to interact with which data. This includes AI models and generative AI analytics pipelines – systems that process large volumes of data and can become a significant risk factor when left ungoverned.

AI-Powered Classification Unifies Data Protection

The new AI-powered classification capability automatically analyzes an organization’s entire data estate and surfaces critical areas of concern: environments with high concentrations of sensitive information, areas with excessive access permissions, and data retained beyond its intended lifecycle. This visibility allows security teams to prioritize risks based on potential impact and take targeted action.

Yoav Cohen, Vice President of Product Management at Commvault and co-founder of Satori, frames the underlying challenge: “As organizations increasingly rely on cloud and AI-driven services, employees are spreading sensitive data across structured and unstructured systems. Without clear visibility and real-time access controls, that data can become overexposed and difficult to manage.”

The new capabilities are directly integrated into Commvault’s cyber resilience workflows, meaning classification and access control serve both a preventive and a recovery function – applying to live production data as well as backup copies.

Phased Availability

Data access governance with real-time controls for structured data is available immediately via Single Sign-On through Commvault Cloud, and as an add-on for any existing Commvault Cloud package. Discovery and classification for structured data are expected to reach general availability in late summer 2026. Pricing details for structured data features will be announced closer to the release date.
