Stackable Birthday

Am 30.September 2020, mitten im Corona-Lockdown, haben Lars Francke und Sönke Liebau das Unternehmen gegründet. U.a. gibt es zum Jubiläum am 23. Oktober ein Anwendertreffen in München.

Stackable ins Leben zu rufen, war laut den Gründern kein Schritt, der von langer Hand geplant worden war. Lars Francke und Sönke Liebau, die sich schon seit ihrer Jugend kennen, arbeiteten als Berater für mehrere Unternehmen. Dort wurde die bisher genutzte, freie Version einer Datenplattform eingestellt.

In einer pandemiebedingten WG entstand die Idee, eine Alternative auf dem Markt zu bringen. Komplett transparent und auf Open Source-Basis. In den fünf Jahren seit der Gründung ist das Unternehmen auf knapp 20 Mitarbeiter angewachsen und hat einen Jahresumsatz in siebenstelliger Höhe.

Die Stackable-Datenplattform wird von Finanzunternehmen, öffentlichen Einrichtungen und in der Industrie genutzt. Aufgrund der konstant steigenden Zahl an Cyber-Bedrohungen hat Stackable die eigene Sicherheits-Strategie in den letzten Jahren laufend optimiert. Da in der Datenplattform verschiedene Open Source-Komponenten zum Einsatz kommen, setzen die IT-Experten auf eine jederzeit nachvollziehbare Software-Lieferkette und eine zweistufige Strategie: Sie priorisieren mögliche Schwachstellen nach der tatsächlichen Gefahr und liefern gezielt Sicherheits-Updates. Stackable ist dafür sogar als CNA authorisiert.

Lars Francke, CTO bei Stackable, berät die Europäische Kommission beim Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) und meint: „Es ist schon Wahnsinn, was aus einer spontanen Idee entstehen kann. Unser Team wächst ständig und wir arbeiten mit Partnern auf der ganzen Welt, davon hätten wir vor fünf Jahren nur träumen können. Wir haben zwar jetzt Grund zu feiern, aber zurücklehnen werden wir uns trotzdem nicht. Die aktuellen Angriffe auf den Paketmanager npm zeigen, wie wichtig ein tragfähiges Sicherheitskonzept ist.“

CPO Sönke Liebau ergänzt: „Dass quelloffene Software schon lange kein Nischenprodukt mehr ist, zeigt der aktuelle Open Source-Monitor der Bitkom. Fast Dreiviertel der deutschen Unternehmen setzen Open Source-Software ein. Und wir sind stolz, ein Teil davon zu sein. Sichere Open Source-Software für Big Data Anwendungen ist genau das richtige Mittel, um die digitale Souveränität in Europa voranzutreiben.“

Lars Francke and Sönke Liebau founded the company on September 30, 2020, in the midst of the Corona lockdown. To celebrate the anniversary, there will be a user meeting in Munich on October 23rd.

According to the founders, launching Stackable was not a long-planned step. Francke and Liebau, who have known each other since childhood, worked as consultants for several companies. There, the free version of a data platform they had previously used was discontinued.

While living in a shared apartment during the pandemic, they came up with the idea of bringing an alternative to the market. It would be completely transparent and based on open source. In the five years since its founding, the company has grown to nearly 20 employees and has an annual revenue in the seven-figure range. Financial companies, public institutions, and industry use the Stackable data platform.

Due to the constantly increasing number of cyber threats, Stackable has optimized its security strategy continuously in recent years. Since the data platform uses various open-source components, IT experts rely on a fully traceable software supply chain and a two-tier strategy. They prioritize potential vulnerabilities based on actual risk and deliver targeted security updates. Stackable is authorized as a CNA for this purpose.

Lars Francke, the CTO of Stackable, advises the European Commission on the Cyber Resilience Act. He says, „It’s amazing what can come from a spontaneous idea.“ Our team is constantly growing, and we are working with partners all over the world—something that was unimaginable to us five years ago. We have reason to celebrate now, but we won’t rest on our laurels. Recent attacks on the npm package manager demonstrate the importance of a viable security concept.“

CPO Sönke Liebau adds: „The fact that open-source software has long ceased to be a niche product is evident in the current Open Source Monitor from Bitkom. Nearly three-quarters of German companies use open-source software. We are proud to be a part of it. Secure open-source software for big data applications is the perfect way to promote digital sovereignty in Europe.”
